Fancy Fences

The Port Authority’s bunkertects continue to insult New Yorkers and the world with their relentless construction of walls that keep us in the dark. Why can’t we see what’s going on at the World Trade Center site? People want to see and they have a right to see. How dare they surround the site with an opaque screen of fancy graphics when democracy is all about transparency?

Mr. Bloomberg, tear down these walls. Save us from these narrow-minded petty bureaucrats who somehow get to impose their expensive ill-conceived ideas on the public. Security my ass, it’s secrecy, plain and simple. Ponderous bureaucracies hate the light of day.

We learn by observation and there is nothing more educational than a construction site. Instead of blocking our view there should be bleachers all around a see-through fence where those who saw the razing of the towers can watch the raising of their replacements. Rude fences make rude neighbors, fancy notwithstanding.
